Dell iPods: When All That Matters Are Music and Price

Did you know that Dell used to sell Apple iPods before? Many people were surprised when Dell started doing this. But two weeks shy to the launch of the first Dell iPods, Dell announced that it would stop retailing iPods in their stores. Then Dell introduced its own brand of iPods, if we may call it so. It was called the Dell Digital Jukebox or Dell DJ for short.

The Launch

Dell DJ was launched to compete directly with Apple’s iPods. Dell produced something really to replace them. In its effort to attract more iPod users to switch from iPod to Dell DJ, they even offered a $100 mail in and trade in rebate during that launch. So on top of the lower price it offered, you would have saved more if you sent in your old iPod.

Well, this was really a good marketing ploy from the company. While they were not able to convert as much iPod users, they were able to attract attention to their launch and their new product.

There was a mixed reaction to this move. Some of us appreciated the low price and got the Dell DJ instead. However, there are many loyal iPod users in the market. If you’re one of them, then you wouldn’t just trade the whole experience of using the iPod. It would be like a way of life for you.

Why Did Some Go for Dell iPods and Others Not?

Well, many of us are really price sensitive. A slight price difference can cause us to change our minds about something. The same is true with iPods. The cheaper price of these iPods was a great attraction. If you can get the same music with a lower price, you’d probably take advantage of the offer.

Then there’s the longer battery life of Dell DJs. That’s something most of us like to have. It enables us to listen to music longer especially while on travel. We also have a choice between charging them through the USB and through an electric outlet.

However, some would argue that these iPods has relatively slower file or song transfer. This is a bit of disadvantage for the DJs because people like to go fast always. It’s also heavier so many still prefer the Apple manufactured iPods. As for the aesthetic design of the unit, the blue screen lights are not good for night use. They are not as clear a white or yellow light would be. The first generation Dell DJs, too, didn’t have FM radios.

Perhaps it really depends on your preference as a buyer and as a user. Apple iPods offers all the perks but at a price. Dell DJs has fewer bells and whistles so you can get it cheaper. If you really want to save and having music portability is your most concern, Dell iPods perhaps would be good enough.
